Angela Maiers presents: 21st Century Literacies and Habitudes Day
June 22, 2009 - West Des Moines, IA
Welcome Learners!
The one-day workshop is designed to allow participants (K-12 teachers, trainers, media professionals, media literacy trainers and activists) to rapidly gain proficiency and understanding of how the new digital and social media tools, the Iowa Core Curriculum, and aspects from the Partnership for 21st Century Skills can extend to the classroom and training space.
In just a few short years, Web 2.0 has profoundly changed both the definition and demands of literacy. Our students (and teachers) must be equipped not only to efficiently find and understand information but to use what they know to participate, engage, and contribute content in multiple ways.

Breakout Session Descriptions
CORE HABITS: Habitudes (Core Habits Workspace)
Core habits - The Habitudes of the 21st century learner is really a core piece of this day, and every day going forward as learners. Without the right Habitudes, their future success will be limited. This session will explore tools and strategies to help identify and teach students the importance of Imagination, Curiosity, Perseverance, Self-Awareness, Courage, and Adaptability.
COMMUNICATION: Read/Write (Communication Workspace)
Images, sounds and animations — like words — become important building blocks whose meanings to help all voices be heard. Just as the same words and phrases can be arranged or manipulated to express different meanings depending on the author’s intent, so can sounds and images. In this session, tools to create various content and message types will be explored.
COLLABORATION: PLN - Sharing/Connecting (Collaboration Workspace)
You know my motto: We are smarter together. Time, space, and geography are no longer limits to collaborative possibilities. We will explore tools and projects that will help you create a personal learning network so you can take charge of your own professional learning, make collaboration and connecting easier, and give you ideas for classroom implementation to meet Iowa Core Curriculum standards.
CONTRIBUTION: Publishing Web 2.0 (Contribution Workspace)
Information and content have traditionally been relatively static things, created once and rarely if ever changed. People don’t just refer to information, or just copy it, they interact with it. They modify it, they create it – and this is to be encouraged. Tools such as podcasting, video-casting, and photo sharing will be examined in this session.
CONTENT INTAKE: Infosumption (Content Intake Workspace)
The amount of content available is growing at an exponential rate, and can become overwhelming to even the best of researcher. The ability to use rapidly changing and evolving technologies to safely filter and find content in order to achieve our personal or professional goals is a critical 21st century skill. This session will support teachers and students to be able to find information they need, determine its importance and authority, and how to use itor share it.
CHANGE: Change Agents (Change Workspace)
For leaders and school administrators, this session will support you with resources and practices as you continue to move your schools forward in the process.

Help! I am working on creating my own PLN and website for class credit. Where do I submit my project? Is this the correct place?

We have been working and exploring a lot of the technology because it was really new to us. We created blog papers where we hope to communicate with each other at the beginning of the year about common read alouds and classroom activites. Then we hope to expand the blogs to our parents and others. Our blog addresses are petersonstigers.blogspot.com and plaggestigers.blogspot.com
We are also working on a tikatok book with a seven year old so that we can be familiar with it by fall.
Please let us know if this is the correct way to post our work for credit. We feel a little lost is cyperspace so you techies don't laugh!!!

Sue and I have met several times to work on our collaborative project. We have established wiki spaces and blogs for each of our classrooms. Twitter and/or podcasts will be used. These projects will meet the following Iowa Core Curriculum concepts and/or skills for grade two: Reading: Read for a variety of purposes and across content areas.; Use a variety of skills and strategies to comprehend nonfiction, informational, and fiction.; Use a variety of strategies to expand reading vocabulary. Speaking; Use appropriate content and conventions for purpose, audience, occasion, and context.; Demonstrate control of delivery skills. Writing; Use an effective writing process.; Use knowledge of purpose, audience, format, and medium in developing written communication.; Apply writing strategies to communicate in a variety of genres.; Use writing as a tool for learning.; Incorporate technology as a tool to enhance writing. You may view these projects by going to the Atlantic School website. Some aspects of the projects will not be completed until after school begins. Please let us know if this satisfies our credit requirements.

Appreciate the community of learning going on here. Thanks for you patience and collaborative spirit. Love the idea of creating your own pages for projects. You can also link to blogs or wiki pages you've created elsewhere, upload docs or link to web20-type areas you might have created elsewehre. We'll do our best to answer your questions individually (though what a great job of co-learning/teaching here!)

I have finished the "Classroom Habitudes" book and put together a spreadsheet/lesson plans for my second grade class. I would like to post that Spreadsheet/lesson plans for sharing with fellow educators and as part of my Viterbo Credit (2), but can't figure out how to upload my spreadsheet...any thoughts??

I'm going to try this....on my wiki page (http://kristincurtis.pbworks.com) I have added a page under the navigation bar (right side) Titled "Angela Maiers Viterbo Project. Inside that folder I have my spreadsheet of lesson plans I wrote up and plan to use with my second graders. It is a daily lesson plan for each of the 6 'habitudes'. I am also submitting this as part of my Viterbo (2) credits.
